Rotting deck boards and soft spots

A board that flexes or crumbles usually has a rotten joist under it. Fix both, or it comes back.

The cause

Why it happens

Rot needs constant moisture. On Singapore balconies the usual culprit is the subframe: old timber battens sitting on a wet slab, or a blocked floor trap that keeps water under the deck. The top boards rot from below, often where you cannot see it.

How we fix it

  • Lift boards over the soft area
  • Replace rotten battens with aluminium runners
  • Clear drainage and leave an access panel over the floor trap
  • Fit new boards and refinish to blend

Questions about this problem

How do I know if my deck is rotten?

Push a screwdriver into the board and the joist beneath. If it sinks in easily or the wood crumbles, that section is rotten.

Does rot spread to the rest of the deck?

Rot spreads where moisture stays. Fix the water problem and the healthy boards stay healthy.
