Loose, squeaky or uneven deck
Rocking boards and popped screws are trip hazards and let water into the frame. They are quick fixes if caught early.
Why it happens
Screws corrode or back out as boards expand and contract. Clips on composite decks snap. On older balconies, rubber shims or timber battens compress over time and the deck goes out of level.
How we fix it
- Replace corroded screws with stainless steel
- Replace broken composite clips
- Re-level runners with adjustable pads or new shims
- Replace any boards that have split around fixings

Questions about this problem
Why does my deck squeak?
Boards rubbing on a loose screw or on a joist that has moved. Re-fixing usually stops it.
My deck is not level any more. Is it serious?
Usually it is the subframe settling. It is fixable, but check it soon: water collects in low spots and causes rot.
