Timber vs Composite Decks: Repair and Upkeep Compared

Timber vs composite decking in Singapore from a repair point of view: how each fails, how each is repaired and which is easier to maintain.

Both timber and composite decks need care in Singapore. They just fail in different ways.

Timber

  • Fails by: greying, splintering, rot where water sits
  • Repair: sand, re-oil, swap boards. Almost always repairable.
  • Upkeep: re-oil every 6–12 months

Composite / WPC

  • Fails by: fading, mould, swelling, broken clips
  • Repair: deep clean, restorer, replace boards. Cannot be sanded if capped.
  • Upkeep: clean twice a year

Which is easier over 10 years?

Composite needs less upkeep, but faded or swollen boards cannot be refinished, only replaced. Timber needs regular oiling but can be brought back to near-new many times.
